Seminars

Afternoon session: 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Payments to Individuals – Doing Taxable Benefits & Benevolence Correctly – Gil Langerak, CCCC

Charities, as employers, can provide a wide spectrum of benefits to their employees.
Charities can meet their charitable purposes by providing benevolence to those who have demonstrated need. This seminar will address:

    • When an employer-provided benefit or allowance is taxable for benefits related to: extended health, pension, travel, training, gifts and other benefits.
    • Distinguishing between public and private benevolence; control via a benevolence policy; and when government reporting (T5007) is required

Abuse Prevention Made Easy(er) – Ken Hall, Robertson Hall

Christian ministries working with children, youth, and vulnerable adults can feel overwhelmed by the challenges of implementing and maintaining an effective abuse prevention for the safety of those in their care, as well as for the protection of their workers from false allegations. This seminar is designed to help leaders better understand their legal requirements, the essential elements of any organization’s prevention plan, and practical strategies for streamlining the abuse prevention process.

Evening session: 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm

Safe Mission Trips – Ken Hall, Robertson Hall

This seminar provides an insurance and legal overview of the risks associated with Canadian charities involved in both short-term missions trips and more permanent international missional work. The following topics will be addressed: best practices for protecting persons outside of Canada, due diligence standards for reducing potential legal liability, injury and liability risk, health and medical risk, and security.

Deputized Fundraising for Mission Trips – Gil Langerak, CCCC

Churches and mission organizations often rely upon participants to engage in “directed giving” or “deputized fundraising” to fund short-term mission trips. This seminar will address the boundaries that charities and fundraisers need to know and work within when soliciting donations. Questions related to donor communication, receipting, trip policies, and other related considerations will be discussed, as a supplement to Robertson Hall’s workshop on safety & security on these trips.

Table talk topics may include the following:

  • Canada Summer Jobs program
  • CRA policy updates
  • Legal Information
  • Facility rentals to Outside User Groups
  • Insurance for Christian leaders
  • Social Media – Keeping Online and Out of Court
  • The #MeToo Movement in the Christian workplace.
